About Meredith Isaksen

Hi there, I’m Meredith. I enjoy working with teens, adults, mothers, families, couples and parents. It is my deepest priority to ensure my clients feel witnessed and accepted.

I am a trauma-informed and depth oriented psychotherapist, committed to tailoring treatment to my client's individual needs. I am informed by a variety of methods, including attachment theory (examining how our early experiences may impact us today), narrative therapy (how the stories we tell about ourselves impact how we feel), mindfulness, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). I have worked in both private practice and school settings, and have experience supporting my clients with anxiety, depression, grief, relationship issues and life transitions. I also care deeply about helping mothers navigate difficult fertility challenges and loss, from miscarriage and stillbirth to termination for medical reasons. I am the mother to three dynamically different children (ages 12, 9 and 5) and am very familiar with the unique challenges that we face as mothers and parents during this time.

In addition to being a registered AMFT (#151125), I hold a Masters in Fine Arts in Poetry and taught writing and literature for 13 years in the California Community College system. I worked with students of all ages, languages, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and socioeconomic groups, as well as international students who hailed from countries across the globe. It was during my time as a student of poetry and a teacher of writing and literature that I became adept at not only listening for thematic elements and cultural/societal influences in people’s stories, but where I learned how one might hone language to express that which can feel ineffable. The work of therapy is similar in its quest to interrogate the experience of being human, find the language to release us from pain, and empower us to live more contented and fulfilling lives.

Education

I earned my MA in Counseling Psychology from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA and hold an MFA in Poetry from SFSU, as well as BA in Literature and Geography from The George Washington University.

I have received additional training from Postpartum Support International and am able to support mothers and families during the perinatal and postpartum periods, one of the most dynamic, difficult and transformative times in a person’s life.
